Вряд ли был на свете другой писатель, который тратил столько усилий на то, чтобы всегда оставаться незаметным в толпе. Он ни разу не выступал на эстраде или даже в тесном кругу с чтением своих произведений; в театре, на премьере своих пьес, садился в самые последние ряды, и, глядя на него, никто бы не поверил, что это автор пьесы. А когда он пожертвовал одной из библиотек тысячи своих книг, то, прежде всего, попросил: “Никому не говорите об этом!”.
Верно подметил И. Бунин:
«В жизни Чехов был именно тем, чем был в творчестве, – человеком редкого душевного благородства, воспитанности, изящества, мягкости и деликатности при необыкновенной искренности и простоте, чуткости и нежности, при редкой правдивости».
Был в России один строгий и придирчивый критик, который с упрямой враждебностью относился к творчеству Чехова и в течение многих лет третировал его как плохого писаку. Его злые и обидные отзывы о произведениях Чехова были таковы: «дребедень», «ерундишка», «безделица»”. Этим жестоким критиком был… сам Чехов. «Антоша Чехонте», «Человек без селезенки», «Брат моего брата», «Врач без пациентов», «Вспыльчивый человек» – это псевдонимы Чехова, которые соответствовали юмористической направленности его рассказов. А сам факт обращения к вымышленным именам автор объяснял так:
«Фамилию я отдал медицине, с которой не расстанусь до гробовой доски, а игра в литературу должна иметь разные клички».
Замечательный писатель, он был еще и очень интересным человеком, прожил хотя и короткую, но насыщенную и не совсем обыкновенную жизнь.
Антон Чехов родился в 1860 году в городе Таганроге. Его отец Павел Чехов был владельцем бакалейной лавки, купцом третьей гильдии. Мама Евгения Чехова, в девичестве Морозова, из купеческой семьи, была домохозяйкой. Антон стал третьим из шестерых детей этого семейства, где подрастало пять сыновей и одна дочь.

Известно, что Антон Павлович Чехов не любил вспоминать своё детство. «В детстве у меня не было детства», – писал он своему старшему брату Александру. И главным образом, это связано со скверным характером отца.
Отец писателя, Павел Егорович, был одарённым человеком. С самого раннего детства он имел пристрастие к пению и музыке, играл на скрипке, а написанная им икона Иоанна Богослова и теперь ещё цела и находится в ялтинском доме Антона Павловича.

Павел Егорович Чехов унаследовал от своего отца деспотичный характер и, хотя в письмах семейству проявлял заботу и сострадание, в жизни часто прибегал к рукоприкладству и брани. Он заставлял своих детей с утра до ночи работать в лавке, а также петь в хоре на многочасовых церковных службах.
Душой семейства была мать, Евгения Яковлевна, дочь купца Я. Г. Морозова и А. И. Морозовой (Кохмаковой) – тихая женщина, стоически терпевшая деспотизм мужа и годы нужды. Всегда заботливая, она всю жизнь посвящала детям.

«Отец и мать – единственные для меня люди на всём земном шаре, для которых я ничего никогда не пожалею. Если я буду высоко стоять, то это дело их рук, славные они люди… – писал семнадцатилетний Чехов. – И одно безграничное их детолюбие ставит их выше всяких похвал, закрывает собой все их недостатки, которые могут появиться от плохой жизни»
«Талант в нас со стороны отца, а душа со стороны матери», – часто говорил Чехов друзьям.
Отец был суровым человеком, а мать – добрая, кроткая – научила детей с состраданием относиться к людям и ко всему живому.
Когда Павел Егорович умер, Антону Павловичу достался его перстень с надписью: «Одинокому везде пустыня». Он всегда носил его с собой.
Детские годы Антона и его братьев прошли в постоянных церковных праздниках и именинах. После занятий в школе мальчики должны были сторожить лавку своего отца, ежедневно они вставали в 5 утра, и шли петь в церковный хор.
Антона отдали в греческую школу в Таганроге, в конце августа 1868 года он стал учеником приготовительного класса гимназии, которая была одной из старейших в России.

В 1874 году дела пошли совсем плохо и Павел Егорович стал падать в долговую яму, через два года он вынужден был тайно уехать из Таганрога, 25 апреля 1876 года он приехал в Москву, где его уже ждало всё семейство Чеховых, за исключением Антона, оставшегося доучиваться в гимназии.
Антон, которому было 16 лет продолжал учиться в Таганроге, и ему пришлось жить в своем собственном доме, только уже купленном другими людьми. Чтобы его не выгнали, парень исправно платил, а деньги зарабатывал, подрабатывая репетитором. и еще помогал семье деньгами. На всю жизнь он останется центром семьи, опорой для близких.
Именно во время учебы в гимназии Чехов полюбил книги и театр, у него появилось своеобразное видение окружающей действительности. В то время и произошла первая проба пера – парень стал автором нескольких юмористических повествований и получил псевдоним Чехонте. Так его назвал Федор Покровский, преподаватель Закона Божьего в гимназии. В тринадцатилетнем возрасте Чехов понял, что ему нравится театр и все, что с ним связано. Он стал активным участником домашних постановок, которые устраивали его товарищи по гимназии.
Рассказ-сценка – любимый жанр Антоши Чехонте. Писать он их начал еще в гимназические годы.
Окончив гимназию, 19-летний Чехов переезжает в Москву и поступает на медицинский факультет университета. Будучи студентом, Чехов начал писать короткие юмористические рассказы. В них он высмеивал уродства окружающей жизни. Подписывал их шутливыми псевдонимами.
Через 5 лет он получил звание врача.
Творческая биография Антона Чехова началась в 1880-м, когда журнал «Стрекоза» первый раз напечатал его произведение. После этого он сотрудничает с другими изданиями, которых было достаточно много – «Зритель», «Будильник», «Свет и тени», «Мирской толк». Периодическое издание под названием «Осколки» напечатало на своих страницах его юмористические произведения. В 1883-м на страницах этого журнала читатели смогли прочесть повесть «Толстый и тонкий», спустя год «Хамелеона», а в 1885-м рассказ «Пересолил».
Еще одно периодическое издание – «Петербургская газета», в 1886-м опубликовала новый рассказ Чехова под названием «Ванька». Под всеми этими произведениями красовался псевдоним «Чехонте».
В том же году ему пришло письмо из Петербурга, в котором ему предлагали работу. Чехова позвали в печатное издание «Новое время». Как раз в то время на суд читателей он представил сборники «Невинные речи» и «Пестрые рассказы». После того, как о нем начали отзываться хвалебно, Чехов больше не скрывался под псевдонимом, везде ставил свою настоящую фамилию.
В 1887-м в московском театре Корша прошла премьера постановки по пьесе Чехова «Иванов». Публика реагировала неоднозначно, но в общем спектакль прошел с большим успехом. Затем ее поставили в одном из петербургских театров, но только слегка доработали.
В 1888-м творчество драматурга получило и материальное признание – он получил половину Пушкинской премии за сборник рассказов под названием «В сумерках».
Летом 1888 и 1889 года Чехов с семьей прожил недалеко от города Сумы. В то время умер один из его братьев, и это вынудило его срочно уехать из этого места. Писатель хотел побывать в Европе, однако по воле судьбы оказался в Одессе, где в то время была на гастролях труппа Малого театра. Чехов влюбился в молоденькую актрису, но эти отношения не имели продолжения. Чтобы справиться с нахлынувшей апатией, Чехов решается на переезд в Ялту.
К 1889-му году копилка работ прозаика пополнилась повестями «Степь», «Драма на охоте», «Скучная история», «Огни». Он описывал все, что видел во время своих путешествий.
Чехову очень нравилось бывать в новых местах, и в конце 80-х он очень много путешествует, тем более, что в это время он уже не публиковался в юмористических журналах.
Путешествие А. П. Чехова на Сахалин
Когда Чехову исполнилось тридцать лет, он, неожиданно для родных и знакомых, отправился в далекое путешествие на остров Сахалин. В то время Сахалин был, пожалуй, самым страшным местом во всей России: на острове была каторга, там же селились бывшие каторжане, которым запрещалось возвращаться на материк. Чехов же чувствовал личную нравственную ответственность за людей, которые живут, мучаются и умирают на далеком острове.
Чтобы попасть на остров, ему нужно было проехать всю Сибирь, и это путешествие тоже дало ему много материала для литературной деятельности. Если учесть, что прозаик болел чахоткой, то в этом путешествии ему было очень трудно. Зато впечатления от поездки впоследствии вылились в собрание очерков под названием «По Сибири» и книгу, которую автор назвал просто – «Остров Сахалин».
Поездка на Сахалин очень много дала Чехову-писателю. Он говорил, что теперь в его творчестве «все просахалинено». Прежде всего, это сказывалось в новом, более серьезном взгляде на жизнь, в более остром и мудром понимании ее вопросов.
После Сахалина Чехов напишет такие слова:
«Главное – надо быть справедливым, а все остальное приложится».
В 1892-м сбылась давняя мечта писателя – он стал владельцем усадьбы в Мелихово. Там он поселился с родителями и сестрой Марией, которая была при нем неотлучно. После того, как у Чехова появилось собственное жилье, его жизнь вошла в другое русло. Он снова возобновил медицинскую практику, потому что кроме писательского таланта в нем жила страсть к хирургии.
Во время проживания в Мелихово Антон Павлович исполнял обязанности земского врача, инициировал строительство нескольких школ, участвовал в обустройстве пожарного пункта для селян и колокольни. Следующей его заботой стала шоссейная дорога, ведущая на Лопасню, а также он добился, чтобы на железнодорожной станции появилось почтовое отделение. Помимо этого писатель побеспокоился, чтобы на прореженных участках леса посеяли дубы, вязы, лиственницы, приобрел и высадил свыше 1000 саженцев вишен. На собственные деньги Антон Павлович открыл библиотеку в Таганроге.

Именно мелиховский период принес новые произведения писателя, которые потом стали всемирно известными. Это были пьесы «дядя Ваня» и «Чайка».
У Чехова частенько обострялся туберкулез, он был вынужден уезжать из имения и на некоторое время поселяться на юге. Зимний период 1898-го писатель прожил в Ницце, а после того, как вернулся домой, приобрел землю в Ялте.
В 1899 году Чехов продает свое имение в Мелихово и окончательно поселяется в Крыму.

Именно в это время случились изменения в его личной жизни. Он познакомился с Ольгой Книппер и пригласил ее к себе на дачу.

Весь июль 1900-го года женщина прожила там и после этого их отношения стали официальными. В том же, 1900-м Чехов написал пьесу «Три сестры», которое вскоре поставили в театре, а Ольга сыграла одну из ролей. История повторилась и с пьесой «Вишневый сад» в 1903-м, когда Книппер снова исполнила главную женскую роль и сорвала бурные аплодисменты зрителей. «Вишневый сад» стал последним произведением классика мирового масштаба.
Болезнь и смерть писателя
«Есть изречение: смерть каждого человека на него похожа. Невольно вспоминаешь его, когда думаешь о последних годах жизни Чехова, о последних его днях, даже о последних минутах…»
«Боролся он с неумолимой болезнью долго, страшно долго, без раздражения, без жалоб, почти без слов. Не любил он говорить о своей болезни, когда его расспрашивали».

Чехов был врачом, хорошим врачом, и поэтому он знал последствия своей болезни, знал, к чему она должна привести. Но он не хотел причинять боль своим близким.
Уезжая на лечение в Германию, он в разговоре с некоторыми из своих друзей признался, что едет умирать. Но в письмах к матери, сестре он держался бодро, а с женой Ольгой Леонардовной до последних дней, пока мог двигаться, совершал прогулки по окрестностям Баденвейлера.
Развязка наступила 15 июля 1904 года. Чехов заснул, но вскоре, около часа ночи, проснулся и попросил пригласить врача, первый раз в жизни. Когда пришёл врач, Чехов сам сказал ему, что умирает.
По просьбе Чехова, Ольга Леонардовна принесла ему бокал шампанского. Он выпил до дна, улыбнулся своей удивительной улыбкой и сказал: «Давно я не пил шампанского…», – а потом тихо лёг на правый бок и вскоре умолкнул навсегда…
Есть профессиональный обычай: когда прощаются врачи – пьют шампанское…
Театр и Чехов – два неделимых понятия.
Театр наполнял Чехова: он был и зрителем, и ценителем, и актёром и режиссёром, и драматургом. Театр приподнимал его, давал ему веру в себя, звал его к чему-то. К чему? В ту пору он, вероятно, ещё этого не знал.
С годами театр всё больше и больше занимал душу Чехова. В начале студенческой жизни, на втором курсе университета, Чехов сочинил мелодраму и отнёс её Марии Ивановне Ермоловой, великая актриса готовилась к бенефису. Что ему сказала Ермолова – Чехов не поделился ни с кем. Вернувшись от неё домой, порвал драму на мелкие кусочки.
Нередко потом Чехов зарекался писать для театра, но этот волшебный мир искусства вновь и вновь увлекал писателя. Он часто повторял:
«Искусство и тем особенно и хорошо, что в нём нельзя лгать…Можно лгать в любви, в политике, в медицине, можно обмануть людей и самого господа бога – были и такие случаи, — но в искусстве обмануть нельзя…»
Театр для Чехова был первой и последней любовью. Любовью горькой и радостной, так как история взаимоотношений Чехова с театром исполнена, как и его произведения, истинного драматизма.
Чехов писал:
«Пусть на сцене се будет так же сложно и так же вместе с тем просто, как в жизни. Люди обедают, а в это время слагается их счастье и разбиваются их сердца»

Чехов никогда бы не сказал о себе: «Я – хороший писатель». Но он много раз говорил: «Я – хороший врач». Он называл медицину «женой», а литературу – «любовницей».
Медицинская диссертация, санитарный и участковый врач, прием более тысячи больных в год, борьба с эпидемией холеры, съезды врачей России, сохранение журнала «Хирургия», создание специального Института кожных болезней – все эти факты из жизни А.П. Чехова обычно оставались за кадром внимания библиотекарей и читателей.
Сам Антон Павлович был врачом широкого профиля: терапевт, лор, стоматолог, офтальмолог, хирург, принимал роды… Наделял больных бесплатно лекарствами, которые часто сам и готовил.
Недаром же и чеховские таксы имели клички – медицинские термины: Хина, Бром, Силитра, Катар, Йод… Кстати, он обожал собак, сам вырастил прекрасный сад.
К нему постоянно съезжались и сходились больные со всех окрестных деревень, обращались даже ночью. Он никого не отпускал без лекарства, часто тратил на лечение свои не столь большие средства. Лечил он не только тело, но и душу. Всегда с готовностью откликался на боль и страдания других, бескорыстно помогал людям. Хотел не только врачевать болезни, но и выпрямить души людей, поэтому стал писателем.
«Если бы Чехов не был таким замечательным писателем, он был бы прекрасным врачом. Доктора, приглашавшие его изредка на консультации, отзывались о нём как о чрезвычайно вдумчивом наблюдателе и находчивом, проницательном диагносте. Да и не было бы ничего удивительного в том, если бы его диагноз оказался совершеннее и глубже диагноза, поставленного какой-нибудь модной знаменитостью. Он видел и слышал в человеке – в его лице, голосе, походке – то, что было скрыто от других, что не поддавалось, ускользало от глаза среднего наблюдателя» — говорил о Чехове его друг и почитатель А. И. Куприн.
Образ врача и медицинская тема навсегда вошли в творчество А. П. Чехова. Одним из самых известных рассказов на эту тему стала знаменитая «Палата № 6».
Постоянная врачебная практика имела для творчества Чехова определяющее значение. Такие рассказы и повести, как «Мертвое тело», «Беглец», «Скучная история», «Палата №6», «Черный монах», «Случай из практики», «Ионыч», мог написать только врач. Только врач мог создать образы Астрова, Дорна, Львова, Рагина, Дымова, Старцева, Соболя.
И сегодня, верные Клятве Гиппократа, несут свой тяжкий крест участковые врачи и фельдшера сельских амбулаторий, спасая здоровье и жизни людей.
Чехов всю жизнь следовал своему главному принципу – помогать людям. При этом он остался скромным, не любил почестей, был равнодушен к славе, не терпел шума вокруг своего имени. Стремился к простоте и в жизни и в литературе. Но в то же время был борцом за лучшую и счастливую жизнь.
Он был очень деликатен и всегда боялся причинить другим какие-либо не-удобства. Когда однажды он, почувствовав себя плохо, стал терять сознание, ему пришла в голову мысль, которая при таких обстоятельствах, кажется, не приходила ещё никому: «Как-то неловко падать и умирать при чужих».
Вообще, вокруг Чехова собиралось немало талантливых художников и музыкантов. Именно Антон Павлович создал выражение «левитанская природа».
Чехов не только писал произведения, но прекрасно рисовал, ведь, как известно, талантливый человек – талантлив во всем. Он рисовал карикатуры к своим произведениям.
Никто не понимал так ясно и тонко трудности мелочей жизни, как Антон Павлович Чехов. Сам Чехов был человеком, требовательным к жизни, и очень хотел видеть людей простыми, красивыми и гармоничными.
«Знаете ли, что через триста – четыреста лет вся земля обратится в цветущий сад. И жизнь будет тогда необыкновенно легка и удобна…» – эти слова великого писателя, эта мысль о красоте грядущей жизни помогают понять нам, что Чехов – это не писатель прошлого, он – писатель будущего!
Что за люди населяют сей необъятный простор, именуемый Россией? О чем они думают? От чего страдают? Чего больше всего хотят?
Какой же силой обладает русский человек, способный выжить в жестокой будничности жизни?
Никто не понимал так ясно и тонко трудности мелочей жизни, как Антон Павлович Чехов. Сам Чехов был человеком, требовательным к жизни, и очень хотел видеть людей простыми, красивыми и гармоничными.
«К моим мыслям о человеческом счастье всегда почему—то примешивалось что-то грустное… Я соображал: как, в сущности, много довольных, счастливых людей! Какая это подавляющая сила! Вы взгляните на эту жизнь: наглость и праздность сильных, невежество и скотоподобие слабых, кругом бедность невозможная, теснота, вырождение, пьянство, лицемерие, вранье… Между тем во всех домах и на улицах тишина, спокойствие; из пятидесяти тысяч, живущих в городе, ни одного, который бы вскрикнул, громко возмутился… Все тихо, спокойно, и протестует одна только немая статистика: столько-то с ума сошло, столько-то ведер выпито, столько-то детей погибло от недоедания… И такой порядок, очевидно, нужен; очевидно, счастливый чувствует себя хорошо только потому, что несчастные несут свое бремя молча, и без этого молчания счастье было бы невозможно. Это общий гипноз. Надо, чтобы за дверью каждого довольного счастливого человека стоял кто-нибудь с молоточком и постоянно напоминал бы стуком, что есть несчастные, что, как бы он ни был счастлив, жизнь рано или поздно покажет ему свои когти, стрясется беда – болезнь, бедность, потери, и его никто не увидит и не услышит, как теперь он не видит и не слышит других»
Эти слова из рассказа «Крыжовник» были написаны Чеховым более 150 лет назад, но звучат, словно они родились только что и относятся к нашей сегодняшней жизни. В них – весь Чехов. Антон Павлович и был тем самым «человеком с молоточком», который напоминал в свое время, да и теперь напоминает, что жить пошло, скучно, безынтересно нельзя, что «в человеке все должно быть прекрасно: и лицо, и одежда, и душа, и мысли».
Мягкость, задушевность, простота, совершенное отсутствие лицемерия и ханжества в творчестве А.П. Чехова, пожалуй, наилучшим образом отразили черты русского национального характера. Каждый рассказ или пьеса писателя — это напоминание о чем-то очень дорогом и нужном, бесконечно близком, пусть даже и невозвратном.
Он писал о мелочах московской жизни, в которых, как в капле воды, отражались проблемы русской жизни вообще: о состоянии больниц и аптек, о водопроводе, о стройках, о судебных процессах, растратах и взятках. Юмором Чехов старался исправить то, что его раздражало в жизни. Он бывал в убогих лачугах, темных углах, грязных переулках, в деревнях и небольших городах. Внимательно наблюдал жизнь крестьян и городских тружеников. О народе говорил не понаслышке, но с горькими нотками, заставляющими задуматься о сути окружающей жизни.
Чехов любил все живое. Любил собак, птиц, любил природу. Летом он уезжал из Москвы на дачу в усадьбе Мелехово. Там он сажал деревья, ухаживал за розами. Цветы очень любил. Любил гулять. Был страстным любителем искать грибы. Так, не случайно появился рассказ о судьбе потерявшейся собаки.
Чехов не любил одиночества. Вокруг него всегда было много людей, велись шутливые разговоры, звучала музыка. Он всегда принимал самое живое участие в общем веселье. Чехов любил искусство, литературу, музыку, театр. Дружил с художниками и музыкантами.
Юмор – не отдельная часть творчества Чехова, это его взгляд на мир, его видение жизни, неотделимое от иронии, трагикомической усмешки. В произведениях писателя смешное часто выглядит грустным, а грустное смешным. Благодаря его рассказам можно увидеть весь кошмар происходящего и ужаснуться. А можно и посмеяться над этим миром глупцов и тунеядцев, лицемеров и пошляков.
Чехов научился в маленьком рассказе так передавать жизнь человека, как иному писателю не удастся в большом романе. Не зря появились такие широко известные афоризмы:
«Краткость – сестра таланта».
«Искусство писать – это искусство сокращать.»
«Умею коротко говорить о длинных вещах», – как-то сказал о себе Чехов.
Чтобы понять Чехова – человека, не нужно представлять его себе таким, каким он выглядит на портретах и фотографиях последних лет: с утомленным лицом, в пенсне, делающим его взгляд тусклым. Это не настоящий Чехов. Болезнь и надвигающаяся смерть сделали его таким. Лучше вспомнить, каким был Чехов в юности, в тот славный период, когда начал формироваться его славный талант – искренний и смелый взгляд, бесстрашно устремленный на мир. Это был не просто писатель. Это был человек, который открыл для себя и предложил людям особый образ жизни и мышления. Иными словами, это был человек, который сделал себя сам.
Творчество А. П. Чехова многогранно, писатель постоянно напоминает нам, что жить пошло, скучно, безынтересно нельзя, что «в человеке все должно быть прекрасно: и лицо, и одежда, и душа, и мысли». Давайте помнить об этом.
