ЮНЕСКО (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization — UNESCO) — Организация Объединенных Наций по вопросам образования, науки и культуры, была создана 16 ноября 1945 года в Лондоне правительствами 37 государств и явилась формальной преемницей созданного в 1925 году и ушедшего в небытие Международного института по интеллектуальному сотрудничеству.
Целью создания данной специализированной структуры ООН стало: «Содействовать укреплению мира и безопасности путем расширения сотрудничества народов в области образования, науки и культуры в интересах обеспечения всеобщего уважения справедливости, законности и прав человека, а также основных свобод, провозглашенных в Уставе Организации Объединенных Наций, для всех народов без различия расы, пола, языка или религии».
Штаб-квартира ЮНЕСКО находится в Париже. В ЮНЕСКО в настоящее время входят 193 государств-членов, 2 государства-наблюдателя и 11 ассоциированных членов.
Представительство данной структуры ООН — Московское Бюро ЮНЕСКО было открыто в 1994 году, полноценно начало функционировать с 1996 года и на сегодняшний день активно участвует в реализации таких проектов, как: поддержка реформ и развития систем образования; дискуссии в области реформ научной политики и культуры инноваций, укрепление биосферных территорий; продвижение прав человека и демократических принципов, с учетом положения молодежи как целевой группы этой деятельности; поддержка культурного разнообразия, содействие сохранению материального и нематериального культурного наследия; образование в области профилактики ВИЧ/СПИД; продвижение универсального доступа к знаниям, укрепление демократических норм в сфере информации и коммуникации.
Задачи ЮНЕСКО не ограничиваются строительством школ в разоренных войной странах и публикацией научных открытий. На основе образования, науки, культуры и коммуникации организация стремится к достижению более высокой цели: укоренению в сознании людей идеи защиты мира.
Также среди вопросов, которые охватывает деятельность организации: проблемы дискриминации; изучение национальных культур и подготовка национальных кадров; проблемы социальных наук, геологии, океанографии и биосферы.
