18 февраля в России отмечают День транспортной полиции. Это неофициальный профессиональный праздник сотрудников подразделения Министерства внутренних дел РФ, отвечающих за обеспечение правопорядка на объектах железнодорожного, воздушного и водного транспорта Российской Федерации («Главное управление на транспорте»).

Историю основания и развития этой службы традиционно связывают с началом строительства в России железных дорог. Уже в 19 веке ее охраняли жандармы, а после революции 1917 года вопрос охраны встал еще острее. Эти задачи легли на плечи «милиции», сотрудники которой следили за порядком не только на железной дороге и станциях, но и в городах. В то же время увеличение количества перевозок людей и грузов заставило советскую власть обратить на проблему охраны железных дорог более пристальное внимание.

В связи с чем, 18 февраля 1919 года был издан декрет ВЦИК «Об организации межведомственной комиссии по охране железных дорог». Этот декрет можно назвать первым документом, принятым на пути создания системы охраны железнодорожного транспорта. Со временем эта служба была сформирована в крепкую федеральную структуру.

Нужно подчеркнуть, что с самого начала своего существования это подразделение МВД имело в государстве особый статус — ведь его специалистам была доверена работа по обеспечению и охране правопорядка на водных, сухопутных и воздушных магистралях страны.

Сегодня основными задачами сотрудников Главного управления на транспорте МВД являются вопросы безопасности пассажирских и грузовых перевозок, противодействие терроризму, распространению оружия, взрывчатых веществ, боеприпасов и наркотиков на всех видах транспорта: железнодорожном, воздушном, морском и речном.

К тому же, после терактов последних лет, произошедших на различных видах транспорта, работа сотрудников данного управления становится более ответственной и опасной.

Несмотря на то, что День транспортной полиции России не является официальным праздником, но всех сотрудников ведомства в этот день поздравляют высшие чины МВД. Организуются различные праздничные мероприятия и концерты, а особо отличившихся сотрудников награждают почетными грамотами, благодарностями и ценными подарками.
