За прошедшие до нашего времени годы подводные корабли прошли большой путь от жестяных лодок с керосиновым двигателем до мощных атомных подводных крейсеров.
Идея подводного плавания неоднократно обсуждалась в правительственных и военных кругах России на протяжении 17-19 веков. На протяжении многих лет изобретатели предлагали свои проекты, и некоторые из них были воплощены в жизнь. Так, в 1879-1881 годах по проекту Джевецкого были построены 50 подводных кораблей. Эти лодки приводились в действие мускульной силой гребца, а предназначались они для обороны приморских крепостей.
В декабре 1900 года специальная комиссия приступила к проектированию первого боевого подводного корабля под названием «Миноносец», однако в 1904 году он получил название «Дельфин».
В марте 1906 года утвердили новый корабельный регламент, в него включили подводные лодки на правах кораблей 3-4 ранга. В годы Великой Отечественной войны от ударов советских субмарин фашисты потеряли на море 35 процентов всех своих боевых кораблей и транспортов.
Советское время отмечено созданием ряда лодок мировых рекордсменов: самая большая лодка — «Акула» (подводное водоизмещение — 48 000 тонн), самая скоростная — «Анчар» (до 44,7 узлов), самая глубоководная — «Плавник» (до 1 250 м), скоростные и манёвренные подводные истребители «Лира». В настоящее время на вооружении ВМФ России состоят подводные лодки тринадцати проектов, а дата 19 марта празднуется в России как День моряка-подводника ВМФ.
